Every single one of us, due to our pride, desires to justify ourselves. Yet we know that as Christians Christ died for us in order to merit our salvation and to give it to us freely. The free gift of grace does not, however remove our need to work out our salvation, but rather makes it possible to do just that. Yet we continue playing foolish games of self-justification.
